LiveLung & Cancer Services Host Biomarker Lunch & Learn

Winston-Salem, NC – May 2, 2024—LiveLung, in partnership with Cancer Services, is hosting
Cancer Survivor Lunch, Learn & Live: The Role of Biomarkers in Treatment Decisions on
Tuesday, 11:30am-1:30pm, May 21, 2024 at Graylyn Estate and Conference Center, Mews,
1900 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC. This event is free and open to cancer patients and
their care partners in the Triad.

Keynote Speaker Jimmy Ruiz, MD, Atrium Wake-Forest Professor of Medicine in the Section of
Hematology and Oncology will present on biomarkers and will take questions following his
presentation. The Lunch and Learn will also feature a panel discussion featuring breast cancer,
rare cancer, and lung cancer patients with certain biomarkers. The panel, moderated by cancer
survivor and LiveLung founder Dusty Donaldson, will also include a care partner. Panelists include
Melanie Sisk, Elizabeth Speight, CRNA, and Kevin Speight, MD, and others.

Dr. Ruiz, who specializes in lung cancer, serves as the assistant director for clinical research at
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center and professor of medicine at
Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Ruiz received his medical degree at Southern
Illinois University and completed residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology
and oncology at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. His clinical research focuses on promoting
clinical trial activation and participation, especially among individuals from diverse communities
of color. Dr. Ruiz is past president of the North Carolina Oncology Association and an active
member of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology,
and the National Hispanic Medical Association.

LiveLung is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on a mission to improve health outcomes by
advancing lung cancer education, early detection, and compassion for people impacted by lung
cancer. We do this by hosting a network of monthly educational community lung cancer patient
groups. We provide resource bags to dozens of cancer centers where nurse navigators give them
to newly diagnosed lung cancer patients.
